No time for a book club? BNML’s new Short Story Club has your back. No novels. No meetings. No need to make snacks for anyone other than yourself. Just great short stories.
The February/March selection is Stone Mattress by Margaret Atwood. This collection will not fail to bring you into a wicked and fascinating world. Three of the first stories are interconnected while the rest stand on their own, and mirror the themes of aging and the horrors that come with it. The collection is vivid and humorous at times, dark at others.
Simply pick up copies of the story at the library, read one story, or read them all, see what
others thought of it in the SSC binder, add your own reflections – and be on your way!

Free Language Resources
Resource sharing through the CEF Library System makes it possible for member libraries, including small libraries such as ours, to offer a wealth of information and opportunities. Here’s a quick look at language learning resources that are available with the magic of your library card.
Mango Languages is language-learning software that teaches practical conversation in over 70 languages. It offers the ability to download for learning in the car, progress tracking, and culture notes that enhance the learning experience. With Mango Reader, you can go to any website and get translations in real time. This feature is a Google Chrome extension currently available in 12 languages. The new Mango Vocabulary feature allows you to review chapter vocabulary with flashcards and lists, study words by topic, and even create your own personalized vocabulary lists so that you can study what’s most important for your language learning journey. Mango has recently
introduced American Sign Language to the Mango Languages platform also!
Overdrive offers ebooks and eAudiobooks on language learning. Do you already know some French? Check out the French short stories for beginners!
Resources for children include: First phrases books (French, Spanish, or Italian options);
Let’s learn Korean kit; Bilingual kits for French, Spanish, Russian, and Ukrainian that each include a Vox book with an audio component.

Great Give Back
Let’s Give Back!
We’ve all seen the “Strong Libraries, Strong Communities” sign in front of the library for a few years now. On Saturday, October 21, we are joining over 280 libraries around the state to “walk the walk.”
The Great Give Back is a community service initiative created by the Suffolk County Public Library Directors Association and the Suffolk Cooperative Library System, in conjunction with the Nassau Library System. The mission of The Great Give Back is to provide a day of opportunities for the patrons of the Public Libraries of New York State to participate in meaningful, service-oriented experiences.
Please plan to join us from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21 to make a simple craft for a “give back” endeavor. We are working with community leaders to determine a low-key activity by our patrons that will have the most impact. Stay tuned for details coming soon about this service-oriented activity.
